| DEMO 1 example of one of Grahams sea scape demonstrations on Canson Mi-teintes (smooth side) |
Very simple outline drawing of a wave breaking onto a beach with a washed up mooring buoy to add foreground interest. |
Stage 2 shows a few layers of colour laid across the Canson paper with a light area in the centre sky and foreground beach area. |
Stage 3 shows the first layer of colour blended into the tooth of the paper with the fingers, retaining the light area in the centre. |
Stage 4 shows a little more colour added on the horizon and around the top. Highlights on the clouds softly blended with the finger. |
Stage 5 shows how the white horizon line of the sea separates the sky from the middle distance. The shadow of the wave is added with a dark purple followed by the white of the breaking wave over the top. Using the flat side of a dark pastel dragged horizontally a little foreground shingle is portrayed. |
The finished painting with a little more detail in the foreground which helps to push things back into the painting. Notice the dark area of shingle does not form a barrier across the foreground and that I have used the water to create a lead-in to the picture. This painting is covered in my workshops and demonstrations. |
